The people of Anthem, the city symbolizing slavery, learn to live without self-expression or an ego. Equality starts writing in a tunnel that he discovered and begins thinking his own thoughts. Anthem relates to the struggle of man with being free and fighting the masses of conformity. Anthem has been around me for as long as I can remember. He is not allowed to convey himself, and Rand makes sure to point this out with this quote. In conclusion, we see that the opening sentence to the story describes the world in which there is no individualism and it forces people to realize that this is something they take for granted every day. Anthem a novel by Ayn Rand is set in a dystopic society written from the perspective of Equality a man wrought with ideas and conflict. He states, “It is not good to feel too much joy nor to be glad that our body lives…But we Equality 7-2521 are glad to be living” (46). Considered defiant, he risks his life for individuality, no longer emphasizing over the Council’s idea of a transgression.This quote reveals that the narrator defies the law, and doesn’t want to stop because he’s gradually starting to believe that his thoughts are morally correct, regardless of the Council’s convictions. He goes on to show the Council, who strongly reject his gift.Equality 7-2521 discovers things from the “Unmentionable Times”, (times of the past before everything was forcefully collective in the story’s setting) that allow him to realize why his thoughts about happiness were indeed true.Equality 7-2521’s eventual assessment of his sin is correct because he achieves the realization that individuality is essential to the continuation of mankind, and cannot simply be removed from a person’s life.However, in the world of Anthem, it differed in the aspect that the mistreated labor class highly outnumbered their oppressors in population.
