Self-awareness and effective communication are two crucial factors of nursing practice that determine ones ability to empathise and deliver care to patients (Park, 2012).Nurse-patient communication is dynamic and context specific depending on age, gender, socioeconomic background, culture, education and the patient’s degree of medical condition.A variety of verbal and non- verbal modes of communication can be utilised to ensure safe, culturally competent and reliable care.In a healthcare context, therapeutic communication occurs when nurses use communication techniques and processes, both verbal and non-verbal, in ways that effectively promote understanding, are remedial for the patient and encourage healthy nurse- patient relationships. The nurse establishes, directs and takes responsibility for the interaction and must acknowledge the patient’s verbal and emotional expressions.A professional is characterized by or conforming to the technical or ethical standards of a profession (2) : exhibiting a courteous, conscientious, and generally businesslike manner in the workplace.Being professional should be a subconscious effort in the fact that it should always be applied.Communication and self-awareness are imperative elements of efficient and effective nursing practice. The nurse-patient relationship is professional and therapeutic, and fosters partnership, familiarity and reciprocity.Self-awareness is a transformative process of self, which encompasses the recognition of ones personality, behaviour, emotions, cognitions, motivations, thought processes and natural inclinations (Park, 2012).It is important when communicating with patients and other health professionals, as it allows for the identification of strengths and weaknesses as well as opportunities for professional development and personal growth (Jack & Smith, 2007). They understand that their decisions and behaviours have holistic healthcare impacts and therefore evaluate the implications of their actions.
