Wheat accounts for 17.5% of major crops produced in Ethiopia [6].

Wheat accounts for 17.5% of major crops produced in Ethiopia [6].Currently it ranks second both in terms of volume of production and productivity after Maize and third in terms of area coverage after Maize and Tef [7].At seedling growth stage, 60% of varieties tested with the virulent stem rust isolate from Debrezeit exhibited resistance, while all varieties were resistant to Ambo isolate.

Interestingly, genetic analysis of the Wheat ME core-collection could not distinguish the landraces according to their country of origin.

Field-based evaluation of the core-collection conducted across range of contrasting environmental conditions: Til-Palestine, Bet-Dagan-Israel and Irbid-Jordan with annual precipitation of 500 mm, 360 mm and 315 mm, respectively.

Figure 2 PCo A analysis of the 34 Jordanian (triangle), Israeli (square) and Palestinian (circle) wheat ME core-collection, based on 84 KASP marker SNP data (DWRC assay).

Modern wheat cultivars (open symbols) and landraces (solid symbols).

Principal component analysis showed three main cultivar groups: High yielding lines (modern durum cultivars, and landraces), tall late flowering landraces, and landraces with high grain weight.

This knowledge could serve as basis for future breeding efforts to develop new elite cultivars adapted to the Mediterranean Basin’s semi-arid conditions.
