Literary Theory and Criticism (CRW660M) 3 units A study of the theories, principles, and criticism from 1980 to the present.THESIS Thesis (CRW851M) 6 units The writing of imaginative literature of substantial length, along with an essay describing the creative process.The thesis may be any of the following: a 100-page novel; 2 novellas (50 pages each); 5 short stories (total of 100 pages); 30 poems; 5 essays (total of 100 pages); 3 one-act plays; 1 full-act play and performance; or a 100-page non-fiction narrative.Fiction Writing (CRW801M) 3 units Actual writing of fiction with focus on a work of substantial length, such as a short novel or novella, or a collection of short stories; the completed work will be discussed and evaluated in a workshop.Poetry Writing Techniques (CRW692M) 3 units An intensive study of the techniques in writing poetry, including discussion and critical evaluation of the works of contemporary poets in conjunction with a workshop concentrating on the students’ own output.Our small size allows us to offer a generous financial support package that fully funds every student.We also offer a large and diverse graduate faculty with competence in a wide range of literary, theoretical and cultural fields.The MFA’s academic model is studio/research: integrating substantial work in the academic study and creative production of literary art.Students are individually mentored by accomplished, award‐winning faculty members who are among the most compelling writers in their genres, and who also are known for their excellence in teaching.The Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing program is designed to help students who are seriously committed to their writing to hone their craft further and become productive creative writers, through a grounding in the theoretical and practical aspects of writing, including the prospects and possibilities of publication and performance, and an intensive examination and evaluation of the students’ own works under the guidance of experienced writers.Instruction will be mostly by workshop, including weekend workshops off-campus.
