Your grade will be based on the 6 1 Traits Writing Continuum: idea development, organization, voice, word choice, sentence fluency and conventions.Your grade will be based on a peer review and assessment, your Process Paper* and the teacher evaluation. Analyze how an author’s choices concerning how to structure specific parts of a text (e.g., the choice of where to begin or end a story, time manipulation like pacing and flashbacks, parallel plots, the choice to provide a comedic or tragic resolution) contribute to its overall structure and meaning as well as its aesthetic impact to create such effects as mystery, tension, or surprise.2.

I have seen over and over again how witnessing that process can really help to unlock a student’s understanding of how writing actually gets made. So the first step in getting good narrative writing from students is to help them see that .

Before I get into these steps, I should note that there is no one right way to teach narrative writing, and plenty of accomplished teachers are doing it differently and getting great results. But when they actually have to put words on paper, they forget their storytelling abilities: They can’t think of a topic. They gather at lockers to talk about that thing that happened over the weekend.

We can forge new relationships and strengthen the ones we already have.

When teaching narrative writing, many teachers separate personal narratives from short stories.

In my own classroom, I tended to avoid having my students write short stories because personal narratives were more accessible.

Theme statements: write a statement that explains the most valuable idea in the story; what we learn from the story about a specific theme. This story will be the focus of your final assignment.
