Quinolones or fluoroquinolones (ciprofloxacin, enrofloxacin, oxolinic acid, flumequine, nalidixic acid, sarafloxacin, danofloxacin, orbifloxacin, marbofloxacin, gatofloxacin, and grepafloxacin) have been widely used in animal production and veterinary medicine for the treatment and prevention of diseases [17,18] and also in human beings [19].

Several organisations such as the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the European Union (EU) have set tolerance or maximum residue limits (MRL) for antibiotic residues in food-stuffs derived from animals according to the regulations governing the maximum limits for veterinary medicine in South Africa, (Act No.

54 of 1972) and the supervision commission report of the Codex Alimentarius Commission [39].
