The USC Graduate School provides a number of competitively awarded fellowships for students who have successfully completed the first years of their Ph D program.Applicants who are eligible for these advanced fellowships are nominated by their department or school annually in the spring semester.

The course provides an overview of the types of funding available to USC Ph D students, introduces them to external fellowship opportunities and gives tips on proposal writing and editing.

Students need a USC email to access the course through Blackboard.

Students are exempted from the requirement to register in 594 or 794 in a given semester if they have met the continuous enrollment requirement, complete the Checklist, and upload the manuscript to the Graduate School by the add/drop deadline for that semester.

Students who receive one of a number of designated national awards may be eligible for stipend top offs from the Graduate School.

Fellowships eligible for top offs are noted in the USC Fellowships and Awards database.Once the expected term of degree conferral has commenced, the Thesis Coordinator will verify the Checklist. After verification, you will receive an email confirmation that the manuscript may be uploaded.The subject will read: "Upload Thesis/Dissertation to Thesis Center".Staff in the Graduate School serve as coordinating officials for the National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship Program, the Ford Foundation’s Pre-Doctoral and Dissertation Completion Fellowships, the Mellon/ACLS Dissertation Completion Fellowship, the U. Department of Education, Fulbright Hays Program, the John Randolph Haynes and Dora Haynes Doctoral Dissertation Fellowships and the Josephine De Karman Fellowships.Ph D students applying for external fellowships that are “institutionally limited,” meaning that there is a limit placed on the number of students who can apply, or whose applications require the approval of a university official, should contact the Graduate School well in advance of any deadlines.You are only required to complete the first section. Your action will prompt Thesis Center to send an email containing a link to the form to all of your committee members.Your committee members must indicate their approval by the Checklist Submission Deadline.Research Enhancement Fellowships provide additional opportunities for outstanding Ph D students in any field whose research requires work in particularly complex or distant settings, expertise in languages classified by the federal government as “less commonly taught,” or other unusual activities that are essential for the student’s research.Final Year Fellowships is intended to facilitate the completion and submission of dissertations and are awarded to students with emphasis in fields where research assistantships are not generally available.Upon completion of the fellowship, recipients are no longer eligible for further funding as a graduate student at USC.The USC Graduate School provides a variety of resources to support Ph D students seeking funding.
